What is an AI voice agent?
An AI voice agent is an AI program that answers and places phone calls in a natural-sounding voice. It understands speech in real time, responds conversationally, can take actions like booking an appointment or looking up an account, and hands the call to a human when needed.
Under the hood, a voice agent chains three things in near real time: speech-to-text (turning the caller’s words into text), a language model (deciding what to say and do), and text-to-speech (speaking the reply). Keeping that loop fast is what makes a call feel natural rather than stilted.
Voice agents handle both inbound calls (support, reception, qualification) and outbound calls (reminders, follow-ups, renewals). A warm transfer (handing a live call to a person with full context) is what separates a helpful agent from a frustrating phone tree.
On Tether AI, voice agents run inbound and outbound calls end to end: transcribed live, summarized the moment they hang up, logged to the contact, and transferred to a teammate when it matters.
